UKUUG holds occasional, open (and free) talks for leading lights in the IT world to give a topical talk to IT professionals (both UKUUG members and non-members). Speakers over the last year or so have included Vint Cerf, James Gosling, Eric Raymond and Richard Stallman. We are pleased to announce another such event ...

Tim O'Reilly

founder and president of O'Reilly & Associates

Tim O'Reilly is founder and president of O'Reilly & Associates, thought by many to be the best computer book publisher in the world. In addition to publishing books, O'Reilly has also been a pioneer in the popularization of the Internet. O'Reilly's Global Network Navigator site (GNN, which was sold to America Online in September 1995) was the first Web portal and the first true commercial site on the World Wide Web.
Tim has written numerous books on computer topics, and, as an O'Reilly & Associates editor, he has had a major hand in the development of many of the company's titles, including UNIX in a Nutshell, Programming Perl, Sendmail, Essential System Administration, and The Cathedral and the Bazaar.

The Pause Before the Next Wave

With this year's high-tech slowdown in full swing, programmers, web developers, system administrators, and other IT professionals are suddenly facing an uncertain future, as their stock options go underwater and layoffs replace seemingly bottomless demand for people with tech skills. The dotcom party has turned into an industry-wide hangover. But can this really be the end of an era?"

According to Tim, "Personally, I think this is just a breather before the forward momentum resumes. I can't say how long the breather will take, but I can say with some certainty that the next boom will be even bigger than the last. We're on the verge of fundamental technology shifts as profound as the rise of the personal computer in the mid 80s or the coming of the Web and the mass-market Internet in the early 90s".

The talk will be followed by a question and answer session.
