FOLLOWING THE UKUUG ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
THERE WILL BE A PRESENTATION AT 7.00 p.m.
BY DR. ANDREW FINDLAY OF BRUNEL UNIVERSITY
'Serving the masses: 18,000 users and 5 sysadmins'
The Systems team at Brunel University provides services to about 18,000 users - most of them students who move around during the day and might use different machines at different times. All the servers run Unix, but 90% of the desktop machines run DOS or NT: few of the users know (or care) how the services are provided, but they all expect a rich and reliable environment to work in.
The talk will explain how we deal with the number of people and machines, how we service NT clients from Unix, and how we interface with other support groups in the Computing Service. Finally, it will explore some alternative models for large-scale service provision.
There is no charge for UKUUG members to attend this presentation and there is no need to book seats. The talk will finish at approx. 8.15p.m.
