UKUUG Annual General Meeting 2008

UKUUG's 2008 Annual General Meeting will be held from 6:15pm on Thursday 25th September, at University College London, Cruciform Building (Lecture Theatre 2), Gower Street, London, WC1E 6AE.

Post AGM Talk: Pro Bono IT for the voluntary sector - All about the iT4Communities service (Slides).

iT4Communities introduces IT professionals wanting to volunteer their skills to charities, voluntary and community organisations (VCOs) needing IT help. John Davies will explain how iT4C supports both volunteer and charity right through from project definition to project completion - we are a "soup to nuts" service. The iT4Communities service helps you to deliver your IT expertise to good causes, campaigning organisations and all sorts of voluntary organisations from small neighbourhood groups to national and international NGOs, over 2000 organisations since 2002 and more than ?3 million equivalent value delivered. It will be explained how your help can mean the difference between life and death for an organisation and certainly helps them to do what they do better, faster and more effectively. John will explain how you can get involved - from a simple website to a major systems integration and from troubleshooting to a whole new network. IT volunteering opportunities can help you to broaden your skills as well as to get you out the cube farm and into a very different environment! An explanation will be presented on how the process works, for volunteer, charity and for iT4C. The summary will highlight development of the iT4C core system, based on open source, since 2002 and how iT4C is managed and funded.

Speaker Bio: John Davies is Programme Director of iT4Communities (www.it4communities.org.uk). John has been with iT4C since 2004 having started as a volunteer with iT4C back in 2002. John was responsible for commissioning both major releases of the new IT4C system from 2005 to 2007. Before IT4C, John was in mobile telecoms with Sema Group, Orange, MobileAge Technology and Hutchison Mobile Data, where he worked in system design, requirements analysis and technical sales (packet radio, mobile messaging and systems integration) and in international standards (GSM, 3G and packet radio). John graduated with a B.Eng. in Electronics from Liverpool University in 1968 and a Masters in Computer Science from Manchester University in 1975. John lives with a highly experienced Unix system administrator but remains only an enthusiastic amateur in Unix and open source.

You do not have to attend the AGM or be a member of UKUUG to attend the talk.
