Linux 2004 Conference and Tutorials Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th August Leeds, West Yorkshire |
Route from the Railway StationIf you’ve arrived by train and you’re staying at either the Clarence Dock university accommodation or the Jury’s Inn hotel then you can follow these directions to get there on foot. Once you come through the ticket barriers at Leeds station you’ll be facing approximately in this direction:
Note the WHSmith store on the right, where it may be worthwhile purchasing a copy of The Leeds Guide magazine — it’s only a couple of quid and it’s got a really nice map in the centre pages (all the buildings are individually drawn in 3D!) which will come in handy for navigating the city centre. There are some cash machines on the left, next to Boots. Leave the station by the sliding doors straight ahead; do not turn left and use the side exit (past McDonald’s): Once in the fresh air (well, as fresh as it can be given the number of taxis waiting nearby with their engines on) turn right so you’re heading along here:
See the building in the above picture with the odd green dome-like bit on top? Once you reach there, the road curves round to the left; don’t follow it, but instead take these steps down, following the line of the railway:
At the bottom of the steps head straight on, past the car park:
Keep going till you reach a road, Lower Briggate, where you should turn right and go under this bridge:
After the bridge cross over to the left side of the road, then turn left at the junction (just after Break for the Boarder), so you’re heading along Call Lane (in the opposite direction to the traffic):
Cross the road when you get to this crossing, but keep heading along it:
Follow the road as it curves round to the right:
Then you’ll encounter this shiny metal ball, which is actually a fountain:
The main road curves left here, but don’t take it: walk to the right of the fountain and keep going straight on (which is now in the same direction as the traffic). There’s a couple of restuarants on the right; keep alert, because a few buildings later there’s this footbridge to the right:
Go over the footbridge. Jury’s Inn is the big building directly in front of you:
If you’re staying at Clarence Dock then there’s a little farther to go yet. At the point that we arranged the accommodation there was this lovely scenic route there on foot, along the side of the canal. Unfortunately this has recently been blocked off for construction work (blame Barratt Homes), so do not walk along this path — it’s blocked off at the end and you’ll just have to turn back:
Instead follow the metal fence round the left of Jury’s Inn, past the newly built “restaurant opportunity” on the left:
Keep a look out for this alley on the left which lets you escape out of the new development/building site area and back on to a road:
Turn left when you reach the road, heading for the bigger road:
When you get to the junction you should be able to see Crown Point Bridge on the left. Use the crossings to head straight across:
You should be going down this road here, to the left of the building with the orangey bricks:
Head towards the flags, and you’ll reach the back of the Royal Armouries Museum:
Turn right, down some steps, so you’re walking along the path with the Armouries on your left and the canal (usually with some narrowboats in it) on your right:
When you get to the front of the Armouries building, turn left and walk past the entrance (the museum’s free, by the way, and well worth a look if you’ve got time), then follow the path round to the right, past the Menagerie Court and Tiltyard:
Keep going up the driveway, and Clarence Dock flats are the yellow-ish buildings ahead of you:
Cross the road when you reach them. There is a gate there, but you don’t have a key yet so turn right and walk the short distance to the next junction:
Turn left at the junction:
Just past the bus stop on the left is the entrance to Clarence Dock accommodation:
Once you’ve checked in you’ll want to head up to the Medical Teaching Centre, where the conference is being held. |
