Jan BlunckVFS based Union Mounts for LinuxUnlike a traditional mount that hides the contents of the mountpoint, a union mount presents a view as if the filesystems were merged together. Although only the top layer filesystem of the union stack can be altered, it appears as if it allows anything to be deleted or modified. Files in the lower layer may be deleted with whiteouts in the top layer. Files to be modified are automatically copied to the top layer. For a VFS based implementation, heavy changes to the VFS itself and to some low-level filesystems were necessary. This includes modification of lookup and readdir operations as well as the persistent storage of a whiteout dentry type. |
