Nils Magnus - LinuxTagLeaving its infancy: More than a decade of public LinuxThe perception of the Linux phenomenon has changed over the years. Once a high-profile tech toy for universities and nerds, transiently a hype nucleus of the techno bubble, it is now part of our everyday working infrastructure. Is it tomorrow on our desktops? The state of Free Software is reflected by its presence at conferences, meetings, and expos. They give a snapshot and are often precursors of future development. In this session we will present the story from a conference organiser's point of view, blended with some mayor landmarks on the historical Linux roadmap. What can we learn from the current situation? What are the next steps on the roadmap? Who is actually the driving force in the Free Software development? Is Linux really for everyone or do we instead want to keep it for our ourselves? Nils Magnus is founder and chairman of LinuxTag, Europe's leading Free Software event comprising of both an expo and a conference. In various roles he's been responsible for the development of the successful conference since 1996. He is constantly in search of new ideas and formats to present Free Software to the general public. In a parallel life he is also a consultant for high-security environments and an occasional hacker of both networks and network code. He lives in Hamburg, Germany and is currently preparing a journey to meet Open Source developers and advocates around the world. |
