About BrightonThe cosmopolitan town of Brighton offers all the amenities and entertainment you would expect from one of Britain's leading seaside resorts. Attractions are a mix of heritage, seaside fun and cultural experiences. The unique Royal Pavilion was the spectacular seaside palace of the Prince Regent (George IV) and transformed by John Nash between 1815 and 1822 into one of the most dazzling and exotic buildings in the British Isles. The Volks Railway, built in 1883, is Britain's oldest electric railway and runs for one-and-a-quarter miles along the top of the beach from the Aquarium Station near the Victorian Brighton Pier to the Marina. Conference Venue - The University of Sussex Falmer CampusThe Falmer campus of the University of Sussex is located in the heart of the South Downs in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty, close to Brighton and with easy access to London and the major airports. The campus is set in 200 acres of beautiful parkland just outside Brighton it benefits from excellent public transport, road links and free car parking for conference delegates. Our venue is about 4 miles (6 kms) from the centre of Brighton and 4 miles (6 kms) from the county town of Lewes. From London Gatwick AirportGatwick is the nearest of the London airports. On arrival follow the signs to the railway station and buy a ticket to Falmer. Catch a train to Brighton then change to a train that stops at Falmer (see below). The journey takes about 45 minutes. From London Heathrow AirportThere are two ways to get to Brighton: CoachThis takes about 2 hours. There are several different services which run from Heathrow Bus Station to Brighton via Gatwick Airport. For example, the Jetlink bus costs around £20.00. Coaches run hourly both day and night. National Express also runs services - telephone +44 870 5808080 or check their website at www.nationalexpress.com Coaches will take you to a drop off point which is near Brighton Pier. You can then take a taxi or the local bus service (see below). RailwayTake the underground train (Piccadilly line) from the airport and change at South Kensington station for the Circle or District lines to Victoria station. At Victoria underground station follow the signs to the National Rail station and take the train to Brighton. At Brighton change for a local train to Falmer (see below). From the Channel TunnelThe Eurostar train goes directly to Waterloo Station in London. From there take the underground train (Northern Line) to Embankment station and change to the Circle or District line to Victoria station. At Victoria change to the mainline station (follow the signs) and take the train to Brighton. At Brighton change for a local train to Falmer (see below). From London Victoria Railway StationThere are two trains each hour during the day. Fast trains take 50 minutes; slow trains take 80 minutes. From Brighton Railway StationTake a direct train from Brighton station to Falmer station. The journey takes 8 minues. Falmer station is the third stop on leaving Brighton, after London Road and Moulsecoomb. Falmer station is directly outside the entrance the campus. Through tickets are available from other railway stations. A local ticket from Brighton to Falmer costs £3.10 return before 9am or £2.10 return after 9am. Note that if ticket issuing facilities are available, you must always buy your railway ticket before joining the train. From Brighton to the UniversityBusService number 25 runs every 10 minutes from Brighton to the University of Sussex (slowing to every 20 minutes in the evening) and will cost £1.40 for a single/one way ticket. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes and the nearest bus stop to the station is at Brighton's main shopping centre, Churchill Square which is about 5 minutes walk from the station. If you arrive by coach the nearest stop for the 25 is at the Old Steine which is situated a short walk behind the Coach Station. TaxisYou should make sure you pre-book a taxi or get one from the many licensed taxi ranks around the City. Telephone numbers for some local taxi firms include +44 1273 204060, +44 1273 205205, +44 1273 747474 and +44 1273 202020. A taxi should cost about £10. By RoadThe University is on the A27 road between Brighton and Lewes. If you are driving from London and the north you should take the M23/A23 towards Brighton, which then joins the A27.
