Linux HA v2: One CRM to rule them all

Linux HA (heartbeat) version 2 provides a very powerful user-space cluster resource manager (CRM) for high availability clustering (fail- and switch-over) in a cluster of two to sixty-four nodes. It has a rich dynamic dependency scheme between the resources. Resources have progressed beyond simple one-instance-on-one-node objects, namely groups, clones (N instances on M nodes) and master/slave (K masters chosen from the clones) - all of which can be affected by time and the phase of the moon - and all this is exported either via a new GUI, raw XML or even CIM. This provides for flexible system automation and interesting new opportunities for complex support case escalations.

This presentation will introduce the project to the audience and hint at, from the 10-mile-high view, how these advanced feature are used to model and manage the current buzz:

  • OCFS2 with membership orchestrated from user-space via clones;
  • virtual clusters of Xen guests;
  • layered/stacked clusters of clusters (ie, virtual guests forming a cluster on top of a cluster of physical machines);
  • replicated databases and storage using the master/slave model.
Scaling down, some thoughts will be voiced on how clusters of one node could benefit from these features, as a cross-over between init and cron on steroids.
