Nils MagnusSecuring LinuxSetting up Linux systems and keep them running is a task on its own. Many administrators have additional objectives about the systems their are responsible for, though. Security is a key property almost everybody has to deal with. We give system adminstrators a hand in planning suitable security measures for their systems. Since security has different requirements, we explain which components of a Linux system can be secured, and how they can be secured. Starting with a discussion about root permissions, we look into securing access to the file system both by classic UNIX permissions as well as with more advanced access control. We learn about different ways of identifying running processes and possibly removing them, if they are not necessary for our security goals. We use some powerful tools to detect potential data leaks and will fix them. The session also covers network security: There are several tunable parameters in the Linux kernel, some of them can improve the security of your system. Encryption is a powerful armour against hostile threats, so we learn about where and how we make otimal use of it. The session is a walk-through of the most important security features Linux has to offer and gives hints how to use them in your own environment. Delegates should have some basic knowledge about system and network adminstration (or should attend one of those sessions during the event), but need no special knowledge in security topics. The talk is conculuded by an outlook to more advanced approaches such as AppArmour and SELinux. |
