Crossover music

The Guardian has a big interview with Brazilian music legend Gilberto Gil where he talks about… er, open source software. He is currently serving as Minister of Culture (or counter-Culture, as the headline would have it) in his home country and is interested in overcoming poverty through the free sharing of ideas.

There’s only one thing I’d take exception at; describing his music as “open source” because it is cross-fertilised by other traditions doesn’t ring true about either music or OSS. On the one hand, music has always been like that to one degree or another, and on the other it suggests that OSS is just about cobbling together bits of other people’s stuff.

Having done a bit of research - translation: read his entry on the Wikipedia - it turns out he’s done this before, with an amusing article in Wired Magazine from last year.
