This piece from Internetnews.com reports that
Brad Abrams, group program manager at Microsoft for ASP.NET AJAX … declared that Microsoft is not the cathedral and that open source isn’t really a bazaar when it comes to AJAX, a claim that undermines one of the core underpinnings of the open source movement.
There is a […]

… here. More technically oriented pieces can be found here and here and here and in lots of other places. The Inq’s inimitable take is here and Mozilla’s own account is here.

Here and here are a couple of articles suggesting that Microsoft Office is being given a run for its money, by Open Office and online offerings from Google and others, such as Zoho and ThinkFree.
There are passing mentions of continuing battle over document formats - go here if you are not familiar with […]

Here is our wackiest story yet!
WHAT: Members of Oregon State University’s Linux Users Group have a history of paying homage to Firefox, a free Internet browser produced by Mozilla. OSU’s open source lab stores the servers for Firefox. In August, the student group created a crop circle near Amity to commemorate Firefox’s 200 millionth download. […]

A couple of weeks ago we said we couldn’t find anyone with a bad word to say about Firefox, but Jack Schofield may be the minority of one.

Time, perhaps, to post an analysis of media coverage of Firefox 2 v. IE7 - “that outlet says that”, “this outlet disagrees” - as we have done for a couple of the recent big stories. It may be where we hang out, but everybody seems to agree that Firefox is still the better browser: […]

The Telegraph’s Money section today has a profile of the Mozilla Foundation, focusing on their finances and Mitchell Baker, their Chief Lizard Wrangler (translation: President of the foundation). It being The Telegraph, they seem a bit little taken by her being an, erm, woman…
Mitchell Baker does not look like a typical technology geek. The first […]

*update* - the post originally linked to the wrong article on The Guardian’s site; it’s since been corrected. Apologies.
The Guardian today reports on the results of a series of case studies conducted by the Open Source Academy on the deployment of open source software in the local government sector . Although grandly claiming that “the […]

Software is a unique development in human history and should be treated as such by the patent system. That’s the argument from Gervase Markham in the latest “Man from Mozilla” column over at The Times.
The uniqueness of software means that software and patents have unique interactions. For example, a drug is usually covered by a […]

Internet Explorer is the root of all Microsoft’s problems, and the only reason for its existence is the paranoiac corporate culture at the company. That according to an interesting and widely-blogged column from the pen of John Dvorak over at PC Mag:
All of Microsoft’s Internet-era public-relations and legal problems (in some way or another) stem […]

ZDNet reported on Tuesday that Firefox now enjoys brand status comparable with the likes of Starbucks and Apple, and ahead of that of eBay (who?) and Sony (never heard of ‘em). The annual survey, conducted by a marketing industry website, has never previously had an open source project featured so highly in the rankings.
Part of […]

French analysts XiTi have published a study on Firefox’s market share by geographical location. Worldwide, Europe and Australia lead with 20.11% and 18.60% respectively, with North America close behind on 15.88%.
Stats from within the EU show (perhaps not surprisingly) Finland leading the game with a massive 38% - something eFinland noticed - followed by […]

There was anticipation at the start of the week, including in the mainstream media - The Sydney Morning Herald and BBC News to name just two, a boon for Mozilla given their much-vaunted upcoming publicity push.
A fair few places noted that the foundation’s servers coped a whole lot better with the 2 million downloads […]

Last night’s Newsnight over on BBC 2 took a look at the Flock browser, the buzzword-tastic Web2.0 version of our mate Firefox. You can watch the article via the link above, read the text article written by the correspondent, or read some of the (fairly negative) feedback the article received.
No sheep puns were made during […]

It’s been a while since we mentioned Firefox, but there’s been a few interesting bits and pieces today.
Mozilla’s Gervase Markham has been given some space in The Times to talk about open source software, freedom and a certain browser.
BBC News has some thoughts on liability in the world of software. Surprisingly, despite recognising that being […]

The hype has been crystalising around forthcoming OS browser Flock (their homepage is here; be warned, it’s truly, truly awful site design) with promises of a completely new and innovative “social surfing” experience. The creators of the Firefox–based programme promise a leap forward in the way browsers view the internet in the same way that […]

The Times today has an interview with Gervase Markham of the Mozilla Foundation purpoting to be the inside story on the relationship between open source and big business. The piece is entitled “Charity with 100 million fans”.
In other Foxy news, Blake Ross, one of Firefox’s developers, has let it be known that he is […]

From PCPro:
IBM has announced that it is contributing software to the Firefox Web browser to make it easier for users with visual and motor impairments to use the Web.
The code will enable the navigation of websites and Web pages with keystrokes rather than mouse clicks and will make it possible for pages to be automatically […]
