O'Reilly's Nutshell series are subtitled A Desktop Quick Reference and are designed to allow you to drill down to the information you need when you need it.

As with all the Nutshell series, this new addition to the stable provides a reference listing of SQL statements, functions etc which are used within MySQL, and provides them in sections grouped by type. The structure gives a quick listing of the command syntax, with more detailed explanation if you read on.

In addition to this basic reference, there are guides to the API functions for Perl (via the Perl DBI module), PHP and C. Again, these are comprehensive and useful as a reference.

These are what you will buy this book for, and they do the job very well. This book will sit by your machine to be easily thumbed through. There are additional sections at the beginning of the book covering an introduction to MySQL, a chapter on installing MySQL for the various platforms, and a quick basic tutorial.

The section on installation feels much like padding - you would be better off reading the documentation that comes with the distribution, but then you don't need to read this section. The tutorial is a useful pointer to get you going.

As I said before, this book will be bought as a reference, and it does that job very well. There are other books which cover issues in more depth, but it is always handy to have a Nutshell book waiting by your keyboard for to be A Desktop Quick Reference.
