Apple Technology briefing - Mac OS X and the Power of UNIX

About the Speakers

Simon Patience is a Director of Engineering at Apple Computer, which he joined in 2002. At Apple, he is responsible for the BSD Core of Mac OS X, including the kernel and BSD commands and libraries. Prior to joining Apple, he was the Director of Operating Systems at Afara Websystems (purchased by Sun), building a distributed Linux OS architecture. Before that he worked on distributed operating systems research at OSF (Open Software Foundation) and then at SGI, which resulted in CXFS. He has been in Unix kernel development for 20 years in the UK, France and the USA.

Stuart McRobert is currently Head of the Computing Support Group in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London. He is actively interested in the latest technology especially for high speed networking, storage, servers and advances in system security

Ken Tabb looks after the Mac and UNIX servers and networks in the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire. His talk will focus on uses of the system including Vectorising code for AltiVec parallel processing and Clustering Mac OS X nodes using standard UNIX clustering APIs including demonstrations of how the systems are used in practice.

Simon Cozens does "research programming" for Kasei, and runs perl.com for O'Reilly. He enjoys programming in Perl and Ruby and spends a considerable amount of time in OS X. Read Simon's OS X article in a UKUUG newsletter from last year.
