KDEPrint: Ready for professional Desktop and Enterprise Network Printing requirements

KDEPrint is a versatile front-end to CUPS and other Unix printing systems. Its latest version includes features which make it fit for Enterprise printing requirements for desktop Linux users, network administrators and management people.

The talk will present a live demonstration of many of the "hidden" and not-so-well-known features of CUPS and KDEPrint as they are revealed to the users through the KDE GUI.

It can even be used from all non-KDE applications which support a customizable print command, like AcrobatReader, gv, StarOffice, OpenOffice, Mozilla, Netscape, Galeon, Evolution, and all GNOME programs.

KDEPrint consists of various modules. The most important ones are:

  • kprinter --- The print dialog sporting many innovative features: schedule your prints, attach accounting and job ticketing info, enable pre-filters (f.e. to insert watermarks or create a booklet layout)
  • kjobviewer --- The mature job management tool: prioritize jobs, view & change printoptions, query & print job IPP reports, divert jobs to different printers, reprint completed jobs (also with changed job options, even on a different printer)
  • addprinterwizard --- Scans for available printers, turns installation and configuration into child's play
  • command editor --- Configure "special printers" or pre-filters; uses any file conversion tool you can think of (an example is a special printer named "ViaVoice" reading your e-mail to you ;-)
  • CUPS configurator --- Configure your CUPS daemon using dialogs; works even remotely, if you log into a different CUPS server
  • Print Manager --- Integrated print control center, embeds or accesses all other modules
