Do it yourself -- KNOPPIX remastering the easy way

Remastering KNOPPIX has always been a lot of hassle -- requiring numerous intricate steps on the command line making it easy to forget an important step. While there are several HOWTOs on the net that explain the steps, Ian Naylor thought it would be a good idea to write some scripts to automate the process. He described this during this year's UKUUG Linux conference in Leeds, England. Ian presented a talk on "Building your own Live CD based on KNOPPIX". Fabian Franz, a member of the KNOPPIX team who attended the talk, said afterwards: Ian's scripts just opened my eyes -- it was a very clear structure and for the first time in my life I understood the remastering process from a user's point of view.

Ian and Fabian started talking after the presentation and were inspired to develop a new graphical remastering tool to build a customised KNOPPIX distribution. One day later Fabian was demonstrating the new script to a stunned audience. Unlike previous efforts to solve the same problem this is based on Klaus Knopper's original scripts and written in a way so that future improvements in the master scripts will be reflected in these. Fabian hopes the new tool will be part of the next KNOPPIX release, 3.6. It can be downloaded from http://debian.tu-bs.de/knoppix/remaster/.

Ian Naylor, having worked in support and training using various proprietary software products on and off from 1996-2000, returned to university to formalise and enhance his education and has just completed a BSc. in computing at the University of Sunderland.

Fabian Franz studies computer science at the University of Karlsruhe and has been an active member of the KNOPPIX project since 2003. He is the author of the KNOPPIX installation program and does research in several fields of live CD technology.
