Arjan van de Ven - IntelLinux Power Consumption - It's not just the kernelMost people in the Linux community assume it's the Linux kernel's job to make our laptops and servers use as little energy as possible. And until recently, they were right. In the last 6 months, the kernel has now improved to the point where the rest of the operating system is impacting power consumption negatively, and something needs to be done about this issue. The talk will draw attention to this problem, give some background information on power consumption. Then the talk will describe by means of examples what kind of things in kernel and userspace are significantly hurting power consumption. In addition, strategies and best practices for fixing and coding applications for best power consumption will be discussed. Finally, a set of tuning suggestions will be presented based on the experiences from the community around the PowerTOP project. |
