Francis Irving - mysocietyRunning petitions.pm.gov.uk on linuxTwo linux webservers servers and one database server allowed 1.8 million people to sign a single petition to the British Prime Minister in around 3 weeks, peaking at 150 signatures a second, and then sent everyone an email response within 6 hours. From a launch infrastructure of a single machine to the above cluster, petitions were far more successful than initially expected. This talk covers the scaling and availability of the site, what problems we hit and how they were fixed while the URL was on the front page of national newspapers. The site is run by the charitable project mySociety.org. |
