Making Linux suck less - reducing power consumption

Modern hardware design has been heavily influenced by the desire to reduce power consumption. Linux developers have traditionally ignored hardware designers and their strange ideas, which is one of the reasons why Linux systems draw noticably more power than some competitors. While this clearly has relevance to the ongoing race against overheating machine rooms and global warming, it also has a strong influence on how long your laptop will run on battery power.

Modern developments in the Linux kernel have allowed for a significant reduction in average power draw. Combined with improvements in userspace, this has the potential to improve laptop battery life by over 20%. This talk will cover the issues that developers are trying to rectify, along with hints and tips to make sure that your laptop is running for as long as possible.
