A national Linux Install Day is to be held on Sunday 29th April 2001. This is being organised by local Linux users groups and coordinated by Steve Nice of LinuxSure (http://www.linuxsure.com). SuSE, Red Hat and Mandrakesoft have all offered help and support for this event. Linux services companies Eighth-Layer, LinuxIT and iTS-LINUX will also be involved and sponsoring the event along with LinuxSure. It is hoped that well-known hardware companies will also offer support.
The essential idea is that people can make a request in advance to have Linux installed on their machine - they take the machine to a local install centre on the day, and volunteers will help them do the installation. Install Centres notified so far are in London, Glasgow, Milton Keynes, Leeds, Newcastle, Anglia, Derby, Newark, South Cheshire, Devon and Cornwall and Oxford.
Small businesses are being particularly encouraged to take
an interest and Business Link (
be promoting the event to small businesses.
Anyone interested in volunteering to assist should make contact with the organisers through the web page at http://www.linuxday.org.uk.
